Putting God First

What does putting God first actually look like? Or, how does Matthew 6:33 look now at this present time?

Matthew 6:33- But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

This passage draws from the context where Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount was teaching on the anxiety that is born out of a person worrying about the basic necessities of life. Things relative to everyday living, like what one may eat, drink, or even wear. But before Jesus even began to speak on these things he expounds upon the fact that where a man’s treasure is, there his or her heart will be also, further stating that, ”No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

The idea that is lifted from the context of this passage is, whatever becomes important to a man will drive him. If he takes thought, or worries about the basic necessities of life, then he will order his life around the getting of these things. Causing him to give more priority to his job, family, and other things oppose to God first. I know you may say what is wrong with a man making sure that he and his family has these basic things. Nothing, however, the issues comes in when a person will give priority to these things, putting them first before they even consider what God desires of them.

I have seen life to my experiences where people, myself included will put God on the back burner because of the lack of necessities. How this plays out is people will go to work over church so they may be able to get these things, and when this happens, is that not putting God in the wrong place. I know life is tough sometimes, especially now in the midst of our troubled economy where jobs are scarce, the cost of living is rising, and every man’s needs are growing everyday. So, due to the circumstances, has God okayed our reprioritizing, placing Him second to everything else in our lives, all because we need to make sure we have everything we need.

Bringing me back to the question asked earlier, how does Matt. 6:33 look now compared to those who being witnesses of Jesus, and giving up everything just to follow him? I mean do with decide that things are different now then they were then? So much so, that we giving justification to how one has prioritized his or her life now in the 21st century. Or does God expect the same from us that he has always expected, even then. So how does it look? How do we put God first now?

First, God must be Ruler. Matt. 6:33 says, seek ye first the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is synonymous for the rule of God. One seeking first God’s kingdom, is one who has subjected their selves under the rule of God. By doing this, one acknowledges God as the one in control of his or her own life. And we know God is well capable of being in control. For he is a Sovereign ruler, Psalms 50:10-16 teaches us that everything belongs to God, so if we have need, is he not able to give us everything we stand in need of.

Second, God is Right. His righteousness refers to the righteous standards of God. God is right at His Word, and His Way. Oftentimes man will try to fix his/or her problems being unable to do so. If man had the right answer and the power to control the outcome of every situation, then what would we need with God. Therefore, instead of coming up with our own solution to life’s dilemma, just trust God at His word, and handle life as His word says to handle it, and watch the outcome.

Lastly, understand that God is the Rewarder. The text says, and all these things shall be added unto you. All what things? What you shall eat, what you shall drink, and what you shall wear. God has taken care of all of his creation since the beginning of time, what makes us think that he won’t take care of us. Matter of fact he says after such things do the Gentiles seek, does not already your heavenly Father know you have need of these things? Not only does he know, but he will provide, if we just put him first. Hebrews 11:6 validates this point saying, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Whatever you do, put God first, and keep Him there!

Why the Son of Hermes?

Hermes the Greek god, and son of Zeus was known by his many functions and inventions. Yet, the characteristic that I want to expound upon is his skill in the use of speech and of eloquences. He had profound ability in communication. So much so that he would be called to god of heralds, diplomacy, language, writing, and persuasion. One of his many tasks was as the messenger of his father Zeus, the king of the gods. He was so exceptional at his task that he became the herald for all the gods. A herald was known as a public speaker on many occasions. A herald is one to whom would be given a message and it was Hermes job to deliver that message to the person or persons intended, and if there was any confusion concerning that message it was his job to interpret and explain to the recipient.

I know many may ask why I wish to be known in the world of blogging as the son of a Greek god, especially because I profess my Christianity which detest the teaching of polytheism. Also, we know that a son is defined as a male descendant, child, or offspring, and this is true. However, we all know that words often times take upon themselves many different faces. I will like to lift the though of a son being defined as a man regarded as the product of a particular person, thought, idea, or influence. I am not confessing to be a believer of Greek mythology, nor a follower of the influence that diminishes the power of one supreme God of the universe, who in his divinity created the world which we live.

Nevertheless, I have given myself not to Hermes, but to the skills that he possessed. Matter of fact it is from the name and thought of Hermes, that we get the word Hermeneutics that is define as the study of the general principles of biblical interpretation. Its primary purpose is to discover the truths and values of the Bible, which is seen as a receptacle of divine revelation. This being said I only wish to hone my ability to communicate more effectively. Becoming a better student, teacher, and communicator of God’s word divine.

I wish to use this blog as an opportunity to expound upon thoughts, ideas, and principles that every day people wrestle with in life. I will offer my view on various topics in today’s society, and even give expositions on various text from the scriptures, the Holy book “the Bible”. I hope that you find these post Enlightening, Encouraging, and Empowering. Welcome to my blog!
